Sanyu is General Counsel with the Firm, and practices in the areas of regulatory, corporate, trusts and probate law, and estate planning, with a focus on our private client portfolio. Many are longstanding corporate and institutional clients who rely on us for the carriage or oversight of all legal aspects of their BVI business. Sanyu regularly advises them on transactional matters ranging from property acquisitions and dispositions, asset holding structures, taking security over various assets including high-end vessels, and on regulatory and other issues. She also practices in the civil and commercial courts and is a notary public.
Prior to joining SimonetteLewis in 2009, Sanyu worked as counsel in the Attorney General’s Chambers in Uganda and Antigua; as a senior lecturer in law public law and law and gender at Coventry University in the UK, and at the University of the West Indies Centre in Antigua; and as a Registrar of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court in Antigua.
She holds academic and professional qualifications from Makerere University and the Law Centre in Uganda, the University of Warwick in the UK, and the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad. She is STEP qualified, and the recipient of a STEP student Worldwide Excellence Award (2015).
Sanyu has been involved with a number of organizations at an executive level over the years, including the award-winning association of women lawyers, FIDA-Uganda; in Antigua, the Environmental Awareness Group, the St. John Association Hospice and the pioneering Wadadli Aquatic Racers. She has always done some pro bono legal work, both privately and within organizations where available, and volunteers with the Crisis Intervention Team in the BVI.
